PPG announced that Hong Li, PPG senior staff scientist, fiber glass science and technology, presented on new green fiber glass technology at the 24th International Congress on Glass in Shanghai earlier this year and will present again at the 3rd International Glass Fiber Symposium in Aachen, Germany, Oct. 17-19. During the Shanghai meeting, Dr. Li introduced a new category of glass compositions in two lectures on “New Green Fiber Glass Technology” – both “Part I: Acid-Corrosion Resistant Yarn for Composite and Filtration Applications” and “Part II: Energy and Environmental Friendly Glass Processing.” The new technology offers the potential for significant throughput improvement compared to conventional E-glass fiber-forming and eliminates volatile ingredients such as borates and fluorides. The first presentation focused on general glass properties related to melting and forming and their impact on performance properties such as tensile strength. The second presentation concentrated on energy savings related to batch-to-melt process improvements for E-glass fiber-forming and the potential to achieve lower volatility in molten glass through alkali chemical stabilization in the batch melt. Due to the groundbreaking nature of the technology he presented in Shanghai, Dr. Li was invited to lecture on the same topic at the upcoming International Glass Fiber Symposium in Aachen, Germany. Held every three years, the International Congress on Glass offers an important platform for sharing glass science and technology and displaying the latest achievements made in the field. Presentations review major achievements in the traditional fields of glass science and technology and in the fields of optics, photonics, electronics, nanotechnology, coating technology, biotechnology, polymers and composites. The International Glass Fiber Symposium aims to be the principal international forum for advanced fiber glass technologists reporting outstanding research and development on technology from raw materials to final applications. It brings together leading fiber glass companies, academics, scientists, government administrators and decision-makers to exchange ideas and application experiences, to establish business and research relationships, and to find collaboration partners.
